Assessments & Mastery

Acadience Learning

Acadience benchmark assessments are administered at the beginning, middle, and end of each school year to our students in grades K-6. These assessments are used to measure students’ understanding of literacy and math concepts to pinpoint any areas where they may need a little extra support. Acadience testing helps our teachers be confident that their kids have mastered the skills to be ready to move on to the next grade.

RISE

The Utah RISE assessment is state-mandated year-end test used to measure student proficiency in English language arts, mathematics, and science. The RISE assessment is administered to all students in grades 3-8. RISE is focused on grade level material and is aligned to the state standards, so families will have a better idea on their student’s strengths and areas that may need more practice.

KEEP

The KEEP (Kindergarten Entry and Exit Profile) is an evaluation that is intended to measure the early literacy and early math skills of kindergarten students at the beginning and end of their kindergarten school year. Our kindergarten teachers will work one-on-one with each student to be able to assess their mastery.

What is the Purpose of Testing?

Summative assessments combined with classroom work and teacher feedback give families a more complete picture of a student’s performance so they can better support learning at home and advocate for their child.

Students take different types of tests throughout the school year. Teachers use benchmark and diagnostic tests several times a year to measure mastery of concepts taught in class. Students are assessed at the beginning of the year to identify their “starting point” and again throughout the year to measure their progress. Benchmark and diagnostic tests help teachers identify and address learning gaps early on so students can stay on track to meet grade level expectations.

Teachers use summative testing, such as the RISE assessment, to identify each student’s unique needs to help develop learning goals. Teachers can use testing results to look for trends in their students’ learning to see what concepts they were strong with and what content they struggled with. This helps teachers identify what they taught effectively and where they might change their instructional strategies.

Standards-Based Grading

Soldier Hollow Charter School uses standards-based grading in kindergarten through fifth grade. Standard letter grades are used in our middle school.

What is standards-based grading?

Standards-based grading is a system that evaluates a student’s progress toward mastering specific learning targets, which are the concepts that students should grasp as they work through each course. It was developed to focus on learning and to increase achievement.

What are the benefits of using standards-based grading?

How does standards-based grading differ from traditional letter grading?

Standards-based grading evaluates academic progress toward specific learning targets within state and national standards. Instead of rating a student’s ability to complete a given assignment, it provides information about a student’s progress toward specific learning standards.

Unlike traditional grading, the standards-based system uses a numerical proficiency scale.
